Joe’s research aims to explore whether and how net positive biodiversity outcomes and climate change mitigation can be achieved alongside economic development activities. To do so, he studies conservation strategies under climate change, compensatory conservation interventions (e.g. biodiversity offsetting), counterfactual ecological impact evaluation, ecosystem restoration for climate mitigation, social-ecological system dynamics, and ‘net gain’ for large organisations.
As a result of the research above into biodiversity impact quantification, mitigation, and reversal - performed internationally for 15 years - Joe has become a leading technical expert in Nature Positive. He has also put his research into practice, advising companies and governments through Wild Business (which he co-founded in 2012) across four continents. He officially advises multiple specific leading Nature Positive policy initiatives, including those led by WWF in the UK and the WEF internationally.
